I can't make this up

The New York Times news article on the faux Middle East peace plan includes this from former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter:

Mr. Carter, defeated in his quest for re-election by Ronald Reagan in 1980, speculated that "had I been elected to a second term, with the prestige and authority and influence and reputation I had in the region, we could have moved to a final solution."

Maybe the former president might want to rephrase that.

On a related note: In the Times story, Carter's outrageous quote is the final paragraph. On occasion there are subtleties in media bias, and this is one of them. The quote is newsworthy because of who said it and the outrageous turn of phrase. Normally this would be placed higher in the story. Not at the top, but certainly somewhere in the middle -- and definitely not at the bottom (few newspaper readers read entire articles). But Democrats get better treatment from the Times.
