WASHINGTON, D.C. — After an announcement by the White House last week that all American restaurants would have to serve bacon on their burgers as part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Healthy Living” Initiative provoked outrage from Muslim and Jewish organizations, President Obama is set to announce a compromise at a White House ceremony Monday morning.

While restaurants will still have to provide bacon on the burgers, they won’t be allowed to charge customers for it. Muslim and Jewish diners won’t have to eat the bacon on their burgers—they will be allowed to remove it once it’s been served—but they have to let everyone at their table know that bacon is available.

“This compromise protects the separation of church and state, but at the same time ensures that the public has access to delicious bacon,” said Obama chief of staff Jacob Lew. “We understand the dietary restrictions that Muslims and Jews operate under, but polls by the National Pork Board show that many of them still have the occasional bacon burger.

“It’s those people’s rights that we need to protect,” Lew said.

Lew noted that Hindu customers will get the bacon for free, but must still pay for the burger.

The conscience rights of Muslims and Jews will be protected because they won’t be paying for the bacon—the restaurant will.

The Council on American Islamic Relations and J Street denounced the compromise.

“There’s no such thing as a free meal,” said Rabbi Michael Lerner. “The cost of the bacon will be included in the burger. The money for that unclean animal will still come out of Jewish and Muslim pockets.”

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that there would be no further compromise on the bacon mandate and denied that the controversy was manufactured to shore up his bacon-loving base.

“The President believes very strongly that bacon is an essential part of every burger and the American people shouldn’t be forced to pay for bacon out of their own pockets,” Carney said.
