He's a politician all right

You've heard by now that a top aide to Sen. James Webb of Virginia was arrested Monday after he was caught taking a loaded handgun along with two additional clips of ammunition into a Senate office building.

The aide, Phillip Thompson, has said the handgun belongs to Webb and that he had been "safekeeping" the weapon and bullets for the senator.

A day later Webb has finally spoken, and in a time-honored tradition of politicians of both parties, has apparently hung his aide out to dry.

"I think this is one of those very unfortunate situations where, completely inadvertently, he took the weapon into the Senate yesterday," Webb said. Beyond that, Webb provided little information, never saying whether the gun is his.

"I have never carried a gun in the Capitol complex, and I did not give the weapon to Phillip Thompson, and that's all that I think I'll say," Webb said during a news conference at the U.S. Capitol.

Normally this would be a minor problem, except that the fact that Washington, D.C., has a near absolute prohibition on handguns. Webb has a concealed carry permit for Virginia, but the second he steps foot in the District with a handgun, he's breaking the law.

Asked whether he feels he is above D.C.'s gun laws, which are among the strictest in the country, Webb replied, "I'm not going to comment on any level in terms of how I provide for my own security."

He said he thinks Virginia's gun laws are fair, and "wherever you see laws that allow people to carry, generally the violence goes down."

I think it's fairly safe to say that Webb has been breaking D.C.'s gun law since he was elected to Congress, and now someone else is paying for his arrogance.

Remember, Sen. James Webb is better than you.
