So much depends upon a red heifer

In the Senate debate yesterday over whether 0.28 percent of non-defense discretionary spending should be cut for the rest of this fiscal year or 1.6 percent should be cut, Sen. Harry Reid (thanks Nevada voters!) took to the floor to decry the cuts which could spell the end of Nevada's Cowboy Poetry Festival.

Set aside for the time being Reid's claim that somehow tens of thousands of people would cease to exist if the cowboy poetry festival didn't exist (that's what would happen if we continue to fund Planned Parenthood). I must admit that I'd rather fund cowboy poets than "artists" who put crucifixes in urine.

But this just in: WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY!

When budget cuts need to be made we're always warned that programs for children along with cops and firefighters will be cut. Government officials and bureaucrats always trot those out first, but you've got to give Reid credit here. He's being honest. The GOP isn't aiming at cutting those first (although spending in those types of programs has skyrocketed too), but instead cowboy poetry.

If we can't cut federal funding for cowboy poetry, then what can we cut?
