Unions and abortion

This report in today's Union-Tribune has me scratching my head.

The campaign mailer against Superior Court Judge Jan Goldsmith shows a woman holding a coat hanger – a symbol of illegal abortions – and a sign reading: “Never Again.”

What Goldsmith can't figure out is, what it has to do with his campaign for city attorney.

The San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council sent the political mailer last weekend, noting a Goldsmith vote in the Legislature on a bill making it more difficult for a woman to get an abortion in California.

“A city attorney should defend all of us,” the mailer says. “Assemblyman Jan Goldsmith did not defend a woman's right to choice.”

According to the article, the labor union has spent $54,000 of its members' dues on these mailers. What percentage of those union members support abortion-on-demand? Why is abortion-on-demand and issue that would be of any interest for labor council members?

If there was any doubt that labor is indistinguishable from the Democratic Party, then this should put it to rest.
