Do-nothing Congress

The best thing that can be said about the new Democrat-run Congress is the fact that it hasn't done much of anything. The mainstream media has finally noticed.

In the heady opening weeks of the 110th Congress, the Democrats' domestic agenda appeared to be flying through the Capitol: Homeland security upgrades, a higher minimum wage and student loan interest rate cuts all passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.

But now that initial progress has foundered as Washington policymakers have been consumed with the debate over the Iraq war. Not a single priority on the Democrats' agenda has been enacted, and some in the party are growing nervous that the "do nothing" tag they slapped on Republicans last year could come back to haunt them.

They've got another year of doing nothing before that tag will really stick -- but there's plenty of other reasons to toss the Democrats out.

For the record, here are the items that have become law as part of this Congress:

  • H.R. 486, the "Holloman Air Force Base Land Exchange Act," which directs the Secretary of the Interior to exchange approximately 320 acres of Federal land for approximately 241 acres of private land in the State of New Mexico
  • H.R. 4588, the "Water Resources Research Act Amendments of 2006," which reauthorizes grants for the water resources research and technology institutes established under the Water Resources Research Act of 1984
  • H.R. 6060, the "Department of State Authorities Act of 2006," which provides a number of authorities for the Department of State including authorities related to visa fraud prevention, passport fees, and proliferation interdiction and interdiction assistance
  • H.R. 6345, which expands discretion of Federal banking agencies with respect to frequency of examinations of certain insured depository institutions.
  • Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act of 2006
  • H.R. 6338, the "Geneva Distinctive Emblem Protection Act of 2006"
  • H.R. 6164, the "National Institutes of Health Reform Act of 2006"
  • S. 159, Redesignates White Rocks National Recreation Area in Vermont
  • H.R. 434, which extends the authorizations of certain Small Business Administration programs until July 31, 2007
  • H.J.Res. 20, which provides FY 2007 appropriations through September 30, 2007, for continuing projects and activities of the Federal Government.
  • H.R. 584, Designates U.S. Department of Education as the Lyndon Baines Johnson Federal Building
  • H.R. 1129, which authorizes construction of an arterial road property on a flood plain in St. Louis County, Missouri.
  • S. 494, the "NATO Freedom Consolidation Act of 2007"
  • National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program Reauthorization Act
  • S. 1002, the "Older Americans Reauthorization Technical Corrections Act"
