Don't bet your computer on it

CNET News' Declan McCullagh notes that Sen. John Kerry has indicated he might "defang" the Digital Millennium Copyright Act -- the law that prevents you from making backup copies of your DVDs, among other things.

It's an interesting idea, but I wouldn't bet a plug nickel on it.

Both Republicans and Democrats in Congress have demonstrated an utter disregard for the public when it comes to the idea of fair use and allowing things to eventually enter into the public domain. Hollywood has bought and paid for Congress.

And, as I've pointed out before, Kerry is not exactly careful when he speaks.

If the DMCA is your top issue, then your priorities are seriously out of whack. But don't count on either Bush or Kerry to do anything about the DMCA.
