The problem with Congress

Sen. Tom Carper, a Democrat, demonstrates two of the big problems with Congress in this little clip.

The first problem is that the US Code might as well be written in code. Is it any wonder that whenever the government decides to muck about in just about anything that the cost of that activity goes up simply because you’ve got to hire a lawyer (or a score of lawyers) to make sure that you’re following the new regulations?

The second problem is the more obvious one: legislators are outsourcing their jobs to staffers. If there’s one thing the American people should be able to count on from their elected officials it is that they completely understand the laws they are passing. A big part of that is understanding the legislative language – the very language Carper says is too complicated for him.

The solution?

Make the legislative language easy to understand and elect legislators who see legislating as their job – not their staffers’.
