The world's biggest softball

If any reporter or columnist had thrown softballs like these at President Bush, you'd have the journalistic establishment hyperventilating with outrage:

You’re presented as a wealthy woman from San Francisco when you’re really this middle-class kid from Baltimore …

How do you get more of who you are across?

You get very high marks for holding the caucus together, a very diverse caucus on a lot of different issues.

[What] skills will you bring to the Speakership if the Democrats win?

What about your fund-raising ability?

Strategy—it seems to me you’re pretty good at that.

Quick! Someone get a doctor to remove Eleanor Clift's lips from Nancy Pelosi's rear end!

But what really got me was the opening question and Pelosi's response.

Clift: I think the issues that brought you into politics were the environment and also choice. [You had] five children in six years, a Catholic background…Was embracing choice an issue with your family?

Pelosi: To me it isn’t even a question. God has given us a free will. We’re all responsible for our actions. If you don’t want an abortion, you don’t believe in it, [then] don’t have one. But don’t tell somebody else what they can do in terms of honoring their responsibilities. My family is very pro-life. They’re not fanatics and they’re not activists. I think they’d like it if I were not so vocally pro-choice.

This is not a perfect analogy, but let me illustrate why I find Pelosi's lame pro-choice defense so disgusting.

"If you don't believe in killing newborns, then don't kill them. But don't tell somebody else what they can do in terms of honoring their responsibilities."

What Pelosi and too many like her don't get is that a lot of Americans believe that a fetus is a unique, valuable, human life. Pelosi presents this a sop to pro-lifers, but she's got a 100% NARAL voting record, which translates into support for government-funded abortion on demand from conception to the moment before birth.

The only thing more disgusting than Pelosi's pro-choice position is her trying to patronize pro-lifers.
