An interesting list

CNN Money has a list of 15 stressful jobs that pay poorly.

Unsurprisingly, my old job was one of them: News reporter. According to the article, the median pay is $32,900 (I worked for far less) and 62 percent say their job is stressful.

The other 38 percent are old, lazy and higher-paid. Is it any wonder newspaper circulation continues to tank?

Interestingly enough, jobs in the ministry are also high-stress, low-pay endeavors – music ministry director, minister and marriage/family therapists also rate poorly.

Must-see YouTube

If you didn’t catch this when it first occurred earlier this month, head on over to Ezra Levant’s blog and listen to him and Mark Steyn testify before Canada’s Parliament regarding that nation’s “human rights” commission.

Levant and Steyn acquit themselves well while appearing to a largely buffoonish group of censors. You’d think that a western democracy would treasure the right to free speech more than many of the political hacks asking Levant and Steyn questions.

The highlight of the videos is when Levant lectures a ignoramus MP on how exactly Hitler rose to power – not that the knowledge does the MP any good.

Just go away

Former Democrat vice presidential nominee and presidential hopeful John Edwards and his wife want to extend their 15 minutes of fame.

Despite John Edwards’ extramarital affair that rocked his marriage, his wife described their union as a "love story," albeit an unconventional one.

Elizabeth Edwards told WJLA-TV in Washington late last week that she wants her marriage to work, and that her husband has been supportive as she continues to battle breast cancer.

"John said, ‘Perhaps not the great love story that we hoped, but maybe a great love story nonetheless," she said.

Edwards added: "’Til death do you part, because that’s what I want."

Yeah, a great love story – if Nicholas Sparks wrote those sorts of love stories, he’d be begging on a street corner.

Obscene profits?

After spending 15 years in the newspaper business, I can assure you that I’m familiar with obscene profits. Back in the days before Craigslist came along to decimate their lucrative classified ad sales, newspapers commonly turned 30-40 percent profit margins – and my meager paychecks were proof of that.

So, when Democrats demonize the health insurance industry over their profits, I’m expecting to see newspaper-level profits.

It turns out, when it comes to insurance industry profits, the only thing that’s obscene are Democrats’ lies.

Quick quiz: What do these enterprises have in common? Farm and construction machinery, Tupperware, the railroads, Hershey sweets, Yum food brands and Yahoo? Answer: They’re all more profitable than the health insurance industry.

In the health care debate, Democrats and their allies have gone after insurance companies as rapacious profiteers making "immoral" and "obscene" returns while "the bodies pile up."

Ledgers tell a different reality. Health insurance profit margins typically run about 6 percent, give or take a point or two. That’s anemic compared with other forms of insurance and a broad array of industries, even some beleaguered ones.

Profits barely exceeded 2 percent of revenues in the latest annual measure. This partly explains why the credit ratings of some of the largest insurers were downgraded to negative from stable heading into this year, as investors were warned of a stagnant if not shrinking market for private plans.

Sure enough, according to Forbes magazine, the health insurance industry made an anemic 2.2 percent profit last year. Hospitals made a 2.4 percent profit. If you want to be outraged about “obscene” profits, try the railroad industry (seriously) which made a whopping 12.6 percent profit.

The only thing more surprising than these numbers is the fact that it took the news media six months to get around to reporting them.

Better late than never.

Doing some math

The head of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, Christina Romer, made a rather stunning statement today.

The government’s economic stimulus spending has already had its biggest impact and probably won’t contribute to significant growth next year, a top White House adviser said Thursday.

Christina Romer, the chair of President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, said the initial jolt of the $787 billion stimulus expanded the economy in the second and third quarters of this year. But she said the remaining spending will simply keep the economy from slipping.

"By mid-2010," she said, "fiscal stimulus will likely be contributing little to further growth."

That assessment underscored the fragility of an economic recovery marked by stubbornly high unemployment.

Romer said the government has already spent $194 billion of the total stimulus package, most of it in tax cuts, aid to states and unemployment and food stamps. In addition, she said, $146 billion of spending had been already obligated.

Romer, testifying before Congress’ Joint Economic Committee, said that as of August the stimulus had created or saved 600,000 to 1.5 million jobs. She said a premature end to the stimulus would be "misguided."

"This is not a normal recovery," she said. "Coming out of this, we’ve got lots of things working against us," she said.

Unemployment will remain high, at or above 9.6 percent, through the end of 2010, Romer predicted.

Let’s do the math. According to Romer’s numbers, the $194 billion that’s already been spent “saved or created” 1.5 million jobs – let’s do this as a best-case scenario. (For the record, I think “saved or created” is a crock.) Each of the 1.5 million jobs that Romer talks about cost the U.S. taxpayer $129,333.33.

Romer says that the remaining $593 billion needs to be spent to prevent “slippage” in the economy and “will likely be contributing little to further growth.” So what does that mean in jobs? Does the $593 mean zero jobs “saved or created?” Or just less what we’ve already saved or created? Let’s assume it is the latter. What are the 1.499 million jobs “saved or created” from the remainder of the stimulus package going to cost?

$395,597.06

There had to be a better way to do this. Anyone who continues to defend this stimulus package is an idiot or a fool. Or maybe both.

Pot policy

The Obama Justice Dept. announced yesterday that they would refuse to enforce federal drug laws as it relates to marijuana in states where they have passed laws allowing for the “medical” use of the drug.

Federal drug agents won’t pursue pot-smoking patients or their sanctioned suppliers in states that allow medical marijuana, under new legal guidelines to be issued Monday by the Obama administration.

Two Justice Department officials described the new policy to The Associated Press, saying prosecutors will be told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state law.

The guidelines to be issued by the department do, however, make it clear that agents will go after people whose marijuana distribution goes beyond what is permitted under state law or use medical marijuana as a cover for other crimes, the officials said.

The new policy is a significant departure from the Bush administration, which insisted it would continue to enforce federal anti-pot laws regardless of state codes.

For the record, I’m generally in favor of the nation’s drug laws and I earnestly believe that the “medicinal” qualities of pot are grossly exaggerated.

Now, whether or not you are in favor of this new federal policy or not, here’s the outrageous part of the whole thing that I’ve yet to see anyone highlight: For a man who campaigned vociferously against the “unitary executive” and assailed his predecessor for allegedly ignoring federal law, doesn’t this kinda smack of … oh, what’s that word … hypocrisy?

Seriously. Congress has passed several laws making marijuana possession and use a crime. The Supreme Court has upheld those laws. And now we have a president who has decided unilaterally that he’s not going to enforce them? Heck, if he wanted to get more support for his health care overhaul, he’d probably be better off putting a similar provision in the bills working their way through Congress.

Sunday night movie

You won’t see it on any of the networks, but the anti-AGW movie “Not Evil, Just Wrong” is airing today for free over the Internet.

Live Streams:

I’ll be watching it, but generally let me just say that at a certain point, I start to disagree with the movie’s title. When the other side demonstrates the disdain for openness and transparency that good science requires, demonizes those who disagree with them while at the same time enriching themselves through “carbon credit” indulgences, while the monies of the First World nations could be better used to alleviate the suffering of the Third World… well we’re getting into the realm of evil.

What a joke

President Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize for effort, not for actually accomplishing anything.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it honored Obama for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." [emphasis added]

Ridiculous.

Grade inflation

Time magazine grades President Obama’s first 9 months and give him an … A-?!

I’m trying to imagine what a C would look like.

For the record: Yes, Time is still in the tank.

From comedy to farce

Saturday night, “Saturday Night Live” opened with this sketch.

Yes, that’s a comedian, pretending to be President Barack Obama, making jokes.

Yes, that was stating the obvious. Unless you’re CNN, then you decide that these jokes are worthy of a fact-check.

Do you remember CNN “fact-checking” when Tina Fey/Sarah Palin falsely stated (for effect) that she could see Russia from “her front porch?” No, I don’t either.

All of this would be merely amusing, if it weren’t for Twitter, which now has a robust online snark for those who search for the hash tag #CNNFactCheck. A sample from The Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto:

  • @DefiantKembro ‘El Nino’ is not Spanish for "the Nino" #CNNFactCheck
  • @EnasYorl "Wayne’s World" was not really a public access cable show. #CNNfactcheck
  • @ArielAkiva The superfans were not actually having heart attacks. #cnnfactcheck
  • @thecomeback After checking every river in America, we have not been able to find a motivational speaker living in a van. #CNNfactcheck
  • @jeffdobbs: Over half of Saturday Night Live is NOT ON SATURDAY NIGHT for Eastern time zone. Outrage. #CNNFactCheck
  • @jkfecke In fact, Blue Öyster Cult never included a cowbell player named Gene Frenkle–the musician didn’t exist. #CNNFactCheck
  • @mikehassinger: This just in: "Toonces the driving cat" not real cat, can’t even DRIVE! #CNNFactCheck
  • Other ones that have appeared since Taranto’s post went online:

    • @IronyNow Motivational Speaker Foley’s Van Positioned by Creek, Not River #CNNFactCheck
    • @JimmahIceLLC Breaking: Church Lady not actually lady. #CNNFactCheck
    • @IMAO "CNN now reporting that it was not really a large bee and merely Jon Belushi in costume" #CNNFactCheck
    • @vadoug: Jane Curtin was NOT ignorant. #CNNFactcheck

Heck, she’s probably not a slut either.

But CNN might want to check that.
