The debate

After watching the vice presidential debate on tape delay, there's just a few points/observations I want to make:

  • How the heck does it work out that Joe Biden gets the first word and the last word?
  • Biden says that McCain voted against funding the troops. Exactly who is that going to convince? Seriously. Biden is suggesting that McCain doesn't give a d*mn about them?
  • Once again, the Democrats repeatedly vow to end the war, not win the war.
  • The body double who had been doing the interviews with Katie Couric for Sarah Palin apparently was put back in the luggage compartment of the straight talk express. Palin did well.
  • No questions on energy. Seriously. Moderator Gwen Ifill says something to the effect of "I want to talk about energy. Global warming, what's your position on it?" Global warming != energy policy.
  • Also no questions on abortion. That could be inconvenient for ostensibly Catholic Joe Biden, not to mention the fact that Obama's got that little infanticide problem.
  • No questions on gun control either.

Who won? I don't know if that's an answerable question. I don't think anyone lost. Palin certainly assuaged concerns that shes out of her league. I think most of us knew what we were getting with Biden and there were no surprises there. (Lawyer and constitutional expert Biden got his constitutional law wrong! Don't expect any media reporting on this.)

What this debate showed was -- like in just about every other presidential race in history -- who the vice president is won't be a decisive factor.

  1. She did better than I expected. ALthough it was too bad there were not follow up questions allowed. I think Biden owned the last part of the debate when it got to foreign policy.

Overall not a disaster for either of them.
