Not good enough

In an interview Monday, Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the joint chiefs, said he was in favor of closing down the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

There are good reasons to shut down Gitmo, and there are bad reasons.

Good reason: All terrorist detainees have been given a fair trial and a public hanging.

Bad reason:

Asked why he thinks Guantanamo Bay, commonly dubbed Gitmo, should be closed, and the prisoners perhaps moved to U.S. soil, Mullen said, "More than anything else it's been the image — how Gitmo has become around the world, in terms of representing the United States."

In other words, more than anything else it's been the media's admittedly baseless attacks on the facility and the treatment of the terrorist detainees that has convinced Adm. Mullen that it's not worth the heartache -- not that it's in the best interests of U.S. national security.
