An impressive accomplishment

Today's editorial in The New York Times on Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid's free boxing tickets (one of which was valued at $1,400) manages to allude to a "culture of corruption" that includes only Republicans.

This doesn't prove Mr. Reid wrong, but it does illustrate the power of the Caesar's wife rule these days as Capitol corruption becomes an increasing embarrassment. Legislators are watching former Representative Randy Cunningham stew in prison for bribery. They also anxiously await a fuller account of the influence-peddling trail of Jack Abramoff, the corrupt superlobbyist. And they rail at the notion that prosecutors can search their offices.

Senator Reid is hardly in the dock. But his discomfort — and that of House Speaker Dennis Hastert in being mentioned last week in the endless Abramoff speculations — certainly should reinforce the need for Congress to emphasize vigilance over regret by upgrading the enforcement of ethics rules.

Just to make sure, I used Firefox's search function to make sure I hadn't missed a reference to Democrat Reps. William Jefferson and Alan Mollohan.

I didn't.

*EDIT* Mistakenly promoted Harry Reid. He's been demoted now.
