California's "smarter" senator, Dianne Feinstein, has made a shocking discovery: nuclear weapons kill people.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said the study confirms that nuclear bunker busters cannot dig deep enough to prevent large casualties.

"The bottom line is that it would result in the deaths of up to a million people or more if used in densely populated areas," she said in a statement. "This is the clearest evidence to date that our nation should not pursue the research and development of these weapons."

So, they can't dig deep enough now, so we shouldn't continue to develop technology which may enable them to dig deeper?

And Feinstein's more worried about rogue regimes casualties (these weapons would most likely be used against countries like Iran and North Korea), than defending Americans against WMDs? She's kidding, right?

I think that we now need to consider seriously that former Georgia Sen. Zell Miller was right when he suggested that the Democrat Party would have us fight wars using spitballs.

Even if it ultimately turns out that engineering challenges cannot be overcome, it's still worth it to continue funding the research. After all, as long as countries like Iran think that we might be able to get through hundreds of feet of rock to get to their nukes, then they'll spend more time digging deeper than working on their own nukes.
