In a post earlier this month, I noted that gay rights organizations aren't interested in tolerance, they demand acceptance. Yesterday, legislation that would make gay marriage legal in New Hampshire faces a veto from a centrist Democrat governor because of gay marriage supporters.
How can that be?
To strike a compromise, both chambers had been asked to approve language that would give clergy and others affiliated with religious organizations a number of legal protections, including the right to decline to marry same-sex couples or to provide gay couples with services such as counseling.
The wording was added by Governor John Lynch, a centrist Democrat who said previously that marriage should be exclusively between a man and a woman but agreed last week to sign the bill if his changes were made.
Lynch has said Vermont and Connecticut, two nearby states that have legalized gay marriage, enacted stronger measures to protect religious institutions.
Yes, gay rights zealots don't want tolerance from religious believers, they want acceptance. They want the state to provide them with a cudgel with which to attack churches using "anti-discrimination" laws like this one.
Those who demand tolerance actually want acceptance, but are unwilling to extend either to those who disagree with them.

I agree that they gay marriage supporters don't want mere tolerance. But I think they won't settle for acceptance either. What is demanded is approval. I would be far more likely to consider the issue if I wasn't convinced that any criticism would be considered discrimination and be subject to legal action.
