Feinstein advocates for central planning

And I thought Dianne Feinstein was the smart California senator. Today during a press conference advocating an increase of the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards to 35 miles per gallon Feinstein wanted to know why Americans weren't like the Chinese. [The following quote is verbatim from video shown on Fox News, I couldn't find this particular quote in any print version of the story.]

What the China situation or the other country situation shows is that these automakers, in all of these countries build the automobile that the requirements for mileage state. And they don't fight it, they just do it.

Well, yeah, that's what happens in a communist country.

The marketplace is still the best place to get this sort of thing done. If people want high-mpg cars, they'll buy more of them and the automakers will make more of them.

As for all those "other countries" Feinstein refers to, I'm skeptical that they have all of those safety requirements for their cars that Feinstein and their cohort on Capitol Hill have mandated.

Why am I not surprised that Feinstein is all for central planning?

  1. I'll make a deal, here, now. She can come to my house and analyze my family's transportation requirements. I'll listen.

I won't drive anything bigger than what she rides in.

  2. I completely agree that the market place is the strongest agent of change for encouraging more fuel efficient cars. I think that Washington in general and not just Sen. Feinstein fail to understand this premise and creating new regulations – trying to over legislate industry – is ultimately detrimental to any cause. Americans really need to voice this opinion to their representatives in order for them to take notice and one group that I work with, http://www.drivecongress.com, is trying to help average American do just that. They even have a form that lets you send a letter to them too on the site. If this bill goes through the way that they want consumer choice will continue to be restricted and that will not just harm the auto industry but will negatively impact all of us. Thanks for sharing this again and I hope more people recognize this potential harmful Washington viewpoint.
