Dirty Duke

Prosecutors are asking for a 10-year sentenced for my disgraced and corrupt former congressman, Randy "Duke" Cunningham. Sentencing is scheduled for March 3.

Documents revealed Friday and reported in the San Diego Union-Tribune here, show just how flagrant and systematic Cunningham's corruption was.

Federal prosecutors say the“naked avarice” of Randy “Duke” Cunningham is displayed in this handwritten “bribe menu,” laying out successive amounts ofgovernment contracts that could be “ordered” and the amounts in bribes demanded in return. For example, a $16 million contract was offered in exchangefor a $140,000 boat. A million more, for $17 million total, would cost an additional $50,000.

Duke's defense team is arguing that a 10-year sentence for the 64-year-old politician would be akin to a death sentence. Who knows? It may be, but 10 years also seems about right for what Cunningham has done.

  1. What a sad story. Just this weekend I saw a History Channel special on aerial dogfighting that featured Cunningham and his heroism in an F-4 cockpit over North Vietnam. It's just depressing that a man of such qualities is going to end up like this. But he has no one to blame but himself.
