Losing credibility

In a letter to The Wall Street Journal today, the spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross denies an earlier Journal editorial that charged a ICRC official with using a Nazi slur.

Let's just say that I'm not at all convinced by the ICRC's letter -- and this is a big part of it.

Sources unknown to the ICRC have repeatedly leaked confidential ICRC information to the media, including to the Wall Street Journal. Consequently, the ICRC has had to publicly clarify its positions and it has always striven to do so with self-restraint and in an objective and factual manner.

So, the ICRC's defense to its recent inability to keep its promised confidentiality is to claim that the Watergate burglars have been stealing files from their offices in Switzerland and passing them out to every left-wing NGO and media outlet.

You'll excuse me if I don't believe either of the ICRC's denials.
