The Delaware Primary

The number of Hoystory readers who will be voting in tomorrow’s primaries probably approaches zero, but it seems like it’s incumbent upon conservative bloggers to pick a side in the Christine O’Donnell/Mike Castle deathmatch.

Vote for Mike Castle.

Am I an enthusiastic Castle supporter? Hardly. He’s got a lifetime American Conservative Union rating of 52. Is he a RINO? Yeah.

Then why don’t I choose O’Donnell, the Tea Party social and fiscal conservative?

I’m reminded of the 1991 Louisiana Governor’s race where the crooked Democrat Edwin Edwards was running against white supremacist David Duke. Someone printed up bumper stickers which read: “Vote For the Crook. It’s Important.”

There’s no sign that a right-winger like O’Donnell can win statewide office in dark blue Delaware. That’s the single most important thing. It’s the same reason I supported Carly Fiorina over Chuck DeVore in the California senate primary. California, even in this political climate, would not elect a DeVore.

It’s better to have a 52 ACU guy in that seat than a 0 – which is what electing a Democrat would mean.

Conservatives should elect the most conservative candidate the electorate will tolerate. (Which is why South Carolina Republicans need to get rid of that squish Lindsay Graham.)

You don’t even need to get to the O’Donnell candidacy itself – marred by lies, frivolous lawsuits and paranoia.

So, vote for the RINO. It’s important.

  1. Per your own analysis, you should have then picked former Rep. Tom Campbell in the California primary as he actually had a moderate record. Carly Fiorina, to her credit, ran as a conservative by the end of the campaign, taking no substantial policy positions to the left of my own.

    All the best,

    Chuck DeVore
    California State Assemblyman
