You may remember the four missionaries that were arrested earlier this year outside a Dearborn, Mich., Arab festival in June. Today they were acquitted of “breach of peace.”
Or, as the bizarre Detroit Free Press characterized it: “inciting a crowd.”
Here’s the video again, can anyone tell me where the crowd is that they are allegedly inciting?
Interestingly, if all you had to go on was the Free Press’s story, then you’d probably think these missionaries got away with something. Of course, the video tells the real tale.
Of course, the unhinged individual here is Dearborn Mayor Jack O’Reilly Jr.
Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly Jr. said Friday night that he respects the decision, but the missionaries were anti-Muslim bigots pulling a publicity stunt to gain attention on YouTube in order to raise money.
A video the group posted last year about their encounters at the festival has had almost 2 million views. The group solicits money on its Web site when it travels to Dearborn, claiming the city is a hotbed of Islamic radicalism.
"It's really about a hatred of Muslims," O'Reilly said. "That is what the whole heart of this is. ... Their idea is that there is no place for Muslims in America. They fail to understand the Constitution."
If there’s anyone here that fails to understand the Constitution it’s O’Reilly – and the Dearborn Police Department and District Attorney’s office.
You can send Mayor O’Reilly an e-mail here. Or directly here. Or you can phone him at (313) 943-2300.
