The result was predictable. I mentioned last week that a couple of Live Oak High School administrators had removed five students from school for wearing T-shirts featuring the American flag on Cinco de Mayo.
Well, the fallout has been predictable.
The heightened police presence was due in part to rumors swirling around the school Thursday that Latino gangs would storm the campus and attack white students. According to Wesley Smith, superintendent for Morgan Hill Unified School District, 150 Live Oak students stayed home Friday. That was more than 10 percent of the school's enrollment — three times more than normal — and came despite an auto-dial message from the district encouraging parents to send their kids to school Friday.
Take note that the kids were kicked out of school during lunch. They had gone half the day and nothing had happened.
Why is there such a firestorm? Why do you have all the Hispanic kids at the school up in arms?
Because assistant principal Miguel Rodriguez, by his actions, told them they should be outraged.
If Rodriguez does nothing, then the school doesn’t lose funding for all those students being out of school.
If Rodriguez does nothing, the city doesn’t have to have six police cruisers outside the campus trying to keep the peace.
Miguel Rodriguez, idiot of the month.
