The 47th Samurai

Those of you who saw this past summer's Mark Wahlberg movie "Shooter" are familiar with Bob Lee Swagger, the invention of Washington Post movie critic Stephen Hunter. "Shooter," in book form, is entitled "Point of Impact" and it's different enough from the movie that it's worth a read.

Hunter's latest book, "The 47th Samurai" is another Bob Lee tale set mainly in present-day Japan. Unlike most of Hunter's previous books, this one doesn't include exquisitely researched descriptions of various firearms, instead, as you might of guessed, it's all about swords.

I must admit that I was skeptical that Hunter could weave an engrossing story that involved both Bob Lee and samurai swords, however he succeeds brilliantly. The story moves quickly, and sometimes predictibly, but it is satisfying all the way through.

If you're looking for a fun book as a last minute gift for someone this holiday, you can't go wrong with "The 47th Samurai."
