More housecleaning needed

A few weeks ago I mentioned the case of two seventh-grade boys who were charged with 10 sex crimes for slapping girls on the butt -- including five which, if they were convicted, would require them to register as sex offenders.

After tons of outrage, five felony sex abuse charges were first reduced to misdemeanors and eventually dropped. The boys still face five sexual harassment charges after the judge Wednesday refused to drop the remaining sexual harassment charges after it was revealed that the county prosecutor's office had withheld exculpatory evidence.

So, we have a list of people in Yamhill County, Ore., who need to find another line of work. First, District Attorney Brent Barry, the complete and total moron who brought the charges in the first place. He should also have his license to practice law revoked. Second, deputy district attorney Debra J. Markham needs to be shown the door. Yes, she may only be doing what her boss directed her to do, but sometimes you've got to stand up for what is right and refuse to do what amounts to little more than malicious prosecution.

Finally, the judge, John L. Collins needs to lose his next election. This prosecution is laughable on its face, the taxpayers' money doesn't need to be wasted on persecuting two boys who did a stupid thing that merited nothing more than suspension from school and a stern talking to.
