Three days late?

Someone please tell me that this is a belated April Fools joke.

The government of Belgium's French-speaking region of Wallonia, which has a population of about 4 million, has approved a tax on barbequing, local media reported.

Experts said that between 50 and 100 grams of CO2, a so-called greenhouse gas, is emitted during barbequing. Beginning June 2007, residents of Wallonia will have to pay 20 euros for a grilling session.

The local authorities plan to monitor compliance with the new tax legislation from helicopters, whose thermal sensors will detect burning grills.

For the record, the typical helicopter puts out 1 ton of CO2 for every 900 miles flown and a BBQ emits about 50 grams of CO2 (I'm guessing that's cooking time for the typical slab of beef). So, will someone slap these people and suggest they do the math?

  1. I'm an American living in Belgium. This doesn't really surprise me, because Belgium taxes everything. But Belgians do everything to get out of paying them, and the government understands this. It would be literally impossible to pay all the taxes the government demands. The law is written with this in mind.
