Why would he do that?

If you were watching the networks' coverage of President Bush's speech to the NAACP, you'd be left wondering why he hasn't spoken to the group in 5 1/2 years. According to the Media Research Center, NBC, CBS, and ABC all neglected to mention the proximate cause of Bush's 5-year boycott: The disgusting 2000 ad blaming Bush for the death of James Byrd -- a black man who was brutally killed by a trio of racist rednecks.

The NAACP complained that Bush hadn't signed a hate crimes law, implying that the murderers had gotten off easy -- if my memory is correct two of the three got the death penalty and the third is going to rot in jail. Exactly how much more would a hate crimes law added to their sentence?
