A first, small step

In the mid-1990s, Democrat Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan said this about partial-birth abortion: "I think this is just too close to infanticide. A child has been born and it has exited the uterus. What on Earth is this procedure?"

Yesterday, the Supreme Court finally upheld a ban on this gruesom procedure.

Democrat presidential hopefuls decried the decision. As did Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a man who claims to be pro-life and actually voted for the ban.

I'm not sure how this will play out politically in the 2008 race. Democrats are obviously playing to their base in attacking the ruling, even though a solid majority of Americans in every recent poll approved of banning the procedure. That could paint the Democrats as extremists. However, if they're able to use this decision to hype fears that abortion will be completely banned nationwide, then it might help them.

For the record (via Patterico), this is what was banned yesterday:

Here is another description from a nurse who witnessed the same method performed on a 26½-week fetus and who testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee: “‘Dr. Haskell went in with forceps and grabbed the baby’s legs and pulled them down into the birth canal. Then he delivered the baby’s body and the arms—everything but the head. The doctor kept the head right inside the uterus. . . .“‘The baby’s little fingers were clasping and unclasping, and his little feet were kicking. Then the doctor stuck the scissors in the back of his head, and the baby’s arms jerked out, like a startle reaction, like a flinch, like a baby does when he thinks he is going to fall. “‘The doctor opened up the scissors, stuck a high-powered suction tube into the opening, and sucked the baby’s brains out. Now the baby went completely limp. . . . “‘He cut the umbilical cord and delivered the placenta. He threw the baby in a pan, along with the placenta and the instruments he had just used.’”

Think about how the media typically describes what has occurred in child abuse cases in sometimes gruesome detail. Think about how they described the abuse at Abu Ghraib. Think about how they will describe what happened this week at Virginia Tech as the evil gunman went from classroom to classroom murdering students as details emerge.

Now think about why the media has failed to describe the brutality that is the partial birth abortion "procedure."

  1. Cho uses a gun to put bullets in kids heads and it's rightly condemned as murder. Poke a hole in a kid's head and vacuum out the brain and it's a procedure?
