They must really think we're stupid

I caught the Fox News report on Tuesday's House Judiciary Committee hearing and I must confess that it tested my self control. You knew you weren't going to get any semblance of balance when the hearing is entitled "RECKLESS JUSTICE: Did the Saturday Night Raid of Congress Trample the Constitution?"

Seriously, why even use a question mark?

The next hearing: "RECKLESS REPRESENTATIVES: When did the Judiciary Committee members stop beating their wives?"

There was a lot of preening for the cameras -- as if that were an end unto itself -- and not a whiff of concern that they've probably got a felon in their midst! Just for the record, I checked my freezer again and there still isn't $90,000 in it.

While only six of the 40 members of the Judiciary Committee could pull themselves away from the Memorial Day recess to appear in front of a national television audience, I wasn't suprised to see that one of the local congressmen had dutifully followed his more senior colleagues into insanity.

"The American people do not begin to understand why there is a concern," allowed Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.).

Wrong. We understand the concern, but we don't trust you to keep your own house clean (see: Randy "Duke" Cunningham, Alan Mollohan, et al.) and the Justice Department appears to have gone to great lengths to protect legislative perogatives.

Issa became dramatic. "We have the power to impeach the attorney general," he reminded his peers, before quickly adding: "I think we're a couple of shakes short of a quorum for that purpose."

Yeah, that's real smart politics. Someone check Issa's head for large dents. You'd impeach the attorney general because he treated your colleague better than he would've treated the little people, but not as well as you feel you deserve to be treated? For those of you who haven't been following this case closely, the Justice Department had issued a subpoena for these documents -- and Rep. William Jefferson had ignored it.

What do you think happens to you if you ignore a subpoena?

Fools! Keep talking. Keep whining about privilege when the Justice Department has videotape of a public servant taking a $100,000 bribe.

It looks like it took Republicans just 12 years to get to the point where it took Democrats more than 40 years to reach. The point where you're willing to look the away from the criminals in your midst. The point where you think that you're better than the people you represent.

Maybe in November we should throw all the bums out.

I encourage San Diego area residents to call Rep. Issa and let him know that you're concerned that someone bonked him on the head -- repeatedly. His Vista office phone number is: 760-599-5000.

For those of you outside the San Diego area, maybe you'd be better of calling James "Lack of" Sensenbrenner, he's got a toll-free number: 1-800-242-1119.

Try to be calm and courteous as you ask them: "Have you lost your mind?"

  1. I hope they do bring Gen. Gonzalez before their Committee and that it will be covered by CSPAN. I want to hear a member of Congress reply to Gonzalez asking if they think they are above the law. Every question they ask will be responded to with variations of that idea of Congress thinking themselves above the law. It is very entertaining to see the fat cats we deserve by placing them in Congress now scurrying about, for a change.
