Traitor

The source for The Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning story on the CIA's secret prisons for terrorists in Europe has been fired, and probably will be spending some time in federal prison.

According the the New York Times, the traitor is Mary O. McCarthy, a Kerry supporter who was appointed to her position as senior director for intelligence programs by former National Security Advisor Sandy "I got documents in my Dockers" Berger in 1998.

I hope that this isn't the end of it, and as much as it pains me to admit it, I hope Post reporter Dana Priest, the recipient of the traitorous leak, and some of her editors also find themselves in legal jeopardy. It's bad enough that you've got to trust people like McCarthy with national security secrets, but I think that most journalists are uniquely unqualified to determine what is damaging to national security and what isn't.

  1. I think the Post screwed up too, but punishing them is a very slippery slope. "Damaging" National security is always going to be framed as a political issue even when it isn't. It would probably be better to prosecute the leaker to the full extent of the law as a deterrent, rather than risk freedom of the (filthy or not) press.
