Getting the Tawana Brawley vibe

Yesterday the DNA test results came back in the case of a stripper who claimed that she was beaten and raped by several Duke University lacrosse players. The tests showed no DNA match with any of the 46 lacrosse team members who were tested. This news has apparently failed to have any impact on the local district attorney, Mike Nifong, who vows to go forward with the case.
Since the advent of the CSI television franchise, a lot of prosecutors have come up against jurors who are fans of the show and expect extensive, solid physical evidence with no ambiguities in any case they're asked to judge. (Fifty years ago the "Perry Mason" TV show may have made life equally difficult on defense attorneys who were unable to get the "real perpetrator" to confess.)  It appears as though Nifong -- if he's really going to go through with the case -- will argue that inebriated college lacrosse players are master criminals who are able to commit rape and beat a woman without leaving any DNA on her.

That would've been tough enough pre-CSI -- it's not going to fly today.

At this point in time, it appears that this is a modern day replay of the Tawana Brawley fraud.

Having said that, it's apparent that there's still a problem with racism in this country -- and it's not where you think. At a town hall meeting today, members of Raleigh-Durham's black community railed against Nifong. One asked why these lacrosse players hadn't been arrested yet and said that if the races were reversed, the black kids would be in jail.

Sad if true, but what if the races were reversed? What if these black athletes had been accused of sexual assault by a white stripper with a criminal past? What if the black athletes had been immediately incarcerated ... and Monday morning DNA test results came back negative?

These same community members would by crying "racism" and "rush to judgment" and demanding Nifong's head on a platter -- and rightfully so.

There's racism here -- and it's African-Americans who are demonstrating it.
