Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a fellow hunter Saturday afternoon. The victim, 78-year-old Harry Whittington, is apparently going to be OK.
Comedians are going to have a field day with this, but I think that this was just a cynical effort to up Cheney's poll numbers. Whittington is a lawyer -- shooting lawyers always plays well with the GOP base and this could be a trial (unintential pun) balloon for a more extensive program. But don't think that this is merely a ploy to strengthen his base, Whittington is also wealthy, and a Republican, this will play well with the political left.
On a more serious note, it's things like this that really have the effect of bringing out the silly special interests. At the very end of the Washington Post article linked above, PETA and the Humane Society weigh in on the real victims -- the tasty birds.
As a bonus, you get "gun control" advocates revealing their true feelings -- they are for outlawing the legal, provate possession of firearms. How else do you account for this silliness from Jim and Sarah Brady?
"Now I understand why Dick Cheney keeps asking me to go hunting with him," said Jim Brady. "I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog - and I thought he was an idiot."
"I've thought Cheney was scary for a long time," Sarah Brady said. "Now I know I was right to be nervous."
I encourage the Bradys to get a grip.
