Letters to Nick Kristof

Today's New York Times has three letters responding to Kristof's Saturday column (fisked below). It should come as no surprise that (as is the Times' habit) they all concur with Kristof's assessment of evangelical Christians. The most galling statement comes from the Rev. G. Patrick Thompson, who recalled something his New Testament professor said in […]

I'll be next in line

Common Cause and MoveOn.org filed a petition with the Federal Trade Commission alleging that Fox News' "fair and balanced" slogan amounts to consumer fraud. (via The American Mind) If the FTC actually rules in the two liberal advocacy groups' favor, then I'm going to be next in line with a petition. I'm going to nail […]

Democrats can do no wrong

That is, if you're an editor at The New York Times. When the news broke late yesterday that President Clinton's National Security Adviser, Sandy Berger, had gotten sloppy with classified information, the blogosphere jumped on it. What I found most interesting, however, was how the various media outlets covered it. Or more accurately, didn't cover […]

Single Christians

Today's New York Times has an interesting article on the plethora of books out there aimed at evangelical singles. The piece mainly focuses on women, though there are books out there aimed at men too. Since I've been quoted (anonymously) in one of these books (Single Men are Like Waffles, Single Women are Like Spaghetti), […]

Plant tongue firmly in cheek

European "researchers" are claiming that the current worldwide warming trend can be attributed to the fact that the Sun is hotter. A study by Swiss and German scientists suggests that increasing radiation from the Sun is responsible for recent global climate changes. Sami Solanki, the director of the renowned Max Planck Institute for Solar System […]

Ramesh makes a good point

National Review's Ramesh Ponnuru saw the ad AARP is running of a middle-aged guy going around trying to get donations to save Social Security. Like Ramesh, I think it's a good ad. But Ramesh noticed something I didn't. But in the interests of accuracy, shouldn't the guy be mugging children? Ramesh is right.

Talent, no brains

In the wake of the hit "documentary" by Michael Moore, "Fahrenheit 9/11", raking in nearly $100 million over the past four weeks, singer Elton John proclaims that "there's an atmosphere of fear in America right now that is deadly. Everyone is too career-conscious." Elton John: One taco short of a combination plate.

Kristof reads a book

In today's New York Times, columnist Nicholas Kristof writes his book report on "Glorious Appearing," the latest in the "Left Behind" series of books by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. I've got to give credit to Kristof. He is the only one of the Times' liberal editorial columnists who attempts to see evangelical Christians and […]

Jay Rockefeller's West Virginia

It really has nothing to do with the junior senator from West Virginia, but it just seemed so appropriate. BLACKSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) -- A man smoking in a portable toilet lit up more than a cigarette. The potty exploded Tuesday when a buildup of methane gas mixed with the lit cigarette, said a spokeswoman for […]

Just one comment...

...on today's Paul Krugman column in the New York Times. As I said last week, I don't see how Mr. Bush can win this debate. It doesn't matter what "it" is. Can anyone remember a time when Krugman thought Bush could win any debate? Is there any decision Bush has ever made that Krugman thought […]
