We should've elected his father

State Sen. Abel Maldonado (R-Tax Hikes) spoke at the GOP convention last year in Denver Minneapolis and told the delegates there that his father, once a sharecropper, knew more about basic economics than Barack Obama. Based on Maldonado's vote this morning, the voters should've elected Abel's father. (via Patterico)

California's additional taxes

The California Senate GOP has replaced their leader and continue to stand fast against the Democrats-Schwarzenegger plan to close the state's $42 billion budget gap. If you're wondering what these proposed new taxes would mean to you, the Sacramento Bee has put online a helpful calculator. There is one thing the calculator apparently doesn't take […]

Line of the day

Comes from Jennifer Rubin at Commentary Magazine's Contentions blog: What is wrong with California? More importantly, why does Meg Whitman want to be governor? Maybe managing a successful business that sells junk is good preparation.

Deficits, and debt, as far as the eye can see

The House of Representatives earlier today passed a "stimulus" plan that not a single one of them had read. The bill, totaling 1,071 pages, was finally printed at about midnight last night. The House passed it less than 24-hours later -- far less than the 48 hours they had promised to allow lapse so the […]

Big Brother does it for your own good

First, Oregon proposed tracking drivers using GPS in order to levy a tax for roads, bridges and other assorted infrastructure. Now, Massachusetts is proposing a very similar plan that would embed a tracking chip inside the registration sticker of cars registered in that state. In case you missed it, Big Brother is a liberal and […]

All about appearances

On principle, I think that prohibitions on lobbyists taking jobs in government agencies they once lobbied are unnecessary. While there may be concerns about where their loyalties lie -- with the government job they've got or the private sector job they left -- that's what inspectors general and oversight are for. Often these individuals have […]

California's IOUs

Thanks to the Los Angeles Times, we have the number I was curious about last week. Among the first to get IOUs instead of payments would be business and individual taxpayers who are expecting refunds, local governments and recipients of grants from the California Student Aid Commission. Last year, more than 10 million taxpayers received […]

Maybe the people I owe money will take IOUs too

The California legislature's runaway spending spree of the past decade -- with the assistance of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gov. Gray Davis before him -- has brought us to the point that the state is going to run out of money. In the midst of a housing market that is in the tank and an […]

Nanny state at work

An 86-year-old World War II vet has managed to get a busybody from California's nanny state on his back. Shasta County health officials are cracking down on an 86-year-old disabled World War II veteran who has been selling homemade fruitcakes for more than a decade. The Department of Environmental Health cites an obscure law banning […]

The Big Three (idiots)

This week's big dummies are Rick Wagoner, Robert Nardelli and Alan Mulally, the CEOs of GM, Chrysler and Ford respectively. They earn this award for being too stupid to realize that it might look bad if you flew to Washington in a private, luxury jet, to beg for money from the taxpayers. It's no wonder […]
