Partisan media

I talked for about a half hour last week with one of my former colleagues at the San Diego Union-Tribune. The phone call was mostly about catching up with what had been going on in our lives and partly to discuss the goings-on at the paper. Tim Sullivan's ouster was one subject of discussion, as was an article by The New York Times' David Carr on the new ownership at the paper.

It was the latter that prompted me to complain that we should abandon this idea taught in journalism schools today that the media is unbiased, just-the-facts-ma'am truth-tellers and go back to the days where papers like the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette was a Democratic Party paper. Fox News Channel leans right. CNN leans left. MSNBC is far left. Newspapers are only different in that there are far fewer that lean right than those that lean left.

I wouldn't hesitate to argue that, despite it's new ownership, the Union-Tribune newsroom still leans left politically. There aren't enough conservative journalists out there for the paper to have hired them all—and the newspaper hasn't actually been doing any hiring lately.

NBC News and The Washington Post seem to agree with me. On Monday, allegedly unbiased reporter Andrea Mitchell ran a short piece on Mitt Romney likening the candidate's reaction to the automation and innovation at a WaWa's store (sandwich shop? I don't know what the places are, they appear to be centered in the Pennsylvania and N.J. area.) to George H.W. Bush's infamous (and dishonest) wonderment at a supermarket scanner during his 1992 re-election campaign. Mitchell used a series of highly dishonest cuts to completely obscure what Romney was saying.

SooperMexican was having none of it.

This is where the media cut the video to distort the truth. GOTCHA, you slimy little maggots!!

“People in the private sector have learned to compete and it’s time to bring some competition to the Federal Government and to get it smaller, and have them respond to the customers, which are YOU!!”

Will they correct this? NO. Doesn’t fit into their plan to destroy any Republican running for office.

What are you missing from the MSNBC-edited video? The Media Research Center did an excellent job of demonstrating how it's done.

Yesterday, after being hammered on Twitter and the conservative blogosphere, Mitchell—with Washington Post reporter Chris Cilizza in the split screen—apologized.

Just kidding. No she didn't.

Not enough time? Really?

Apparently not.

Journalism. Wound. Self-inflicted.
