Business owners don't like unions

And that appears to be the case even when the business owner is a big time bleeding heart lefty like Wendy McCaw.

A federal judge ruled last week that McCaw, the owner of the Santa Barbara News-Press, violated federal labor laws when she fired eight employees. The Santa Barbara Independent has a report on the ruling here.

It isn't over. Appeals will be filed and more lawyers' fees collected. In the meantime, the residents of Santa Barbara County are being poorly-served by the local newspaper.

  1. What makes you think McCaw's a "lefty"? Aside from being virulently anti-union (strike one), she is in general opposed to government and of course, was happy to share in the capitalist bounty of McCaw Cellular. True, she's a horribly unprofessional and impulsive, self-absorbed and delusional businesswoman cum spoiled brat, but where are the signs that she is on the left side of the political spectrum? Her paper supported pro-business City Council candidates, she exalts property and animals over people, is anti-immigrant and seems to support a sub silentio racism amongst her paper's management on that issue, and seems to like California's Republican governor far more than the liberal Congresswoman who represents her area (Lois Capps). She's a libertarian, and an environmentalist (while maintaining a heavy carbon footprint with a huge yacht and Bentleys to bring home her groceries with), but mostly she's about pulling up the ladder behind her and making sure her wealth and control are never shared, except with others of her ilk.
