Brief thoughts on immigration

I watched the president's speech last night and was moderately unimpressed. We'll see shortly if the government -- including the congress -- is really serious about staunching the flow of illegal immigrants. Like they say in Missouri, show me.

I was happy to hear that the so-called practice of catch-and-release would be coming to an end. But two things about that statement by President Bush caused a raised eyebrow here at Hoystory. First, why in the h-e-double hockeysticks wasn't that done immediately after 9/11? Second, I think the government will be unpleasantly surprised at what the end of this policy means for their detention facilities. I think they'll quickly have more illegal aliens than they can hold and it won't take a federal judge long to order some of them released to ease overcrowding.

Hugh Hewitt has sent a call out to new Bush press secretary Tony Snow saying that a fence -- a real, tangible, metal fence -- is a necessity that the GOP base demands. Unfortunately for Hugh, he apparently didn't spend much time listening to Tony Snow's radio show before he took his current job. Snow was constantly railing against a fence on the border. Snow's defense of this position was rather lame, apparently he leaves his doors unlocked at home.
