Judge Joan Weber today sentenced cop-killer Adrian Camacho to death today. You can read two articles here and here. The North County Times article (the first link) is the more complete of the two -- and I encourage you to read it and pray for Jamie Zeppetella.
I caught two of the local 11 p.m. newscasts covering the sentencing, and there was one thing that jumped out at me. Jamie is suing the manufacturer of Tony's bulletproof vest that was anything but, and the maker of the fabric. Tony might have survived if the vest had worked as advertised, instead several bullets went right through the vest and two of them were fatal.
I'm of the opinion that, at the very least, the manufacturer of the vest, Second Chance, should be tried for voluntary manslaughter in Tony's death, because they apparently knew that the vests would fail after only a few months, but told no one (it's not really good for sales). The local CBS station mentioned the civil suit and was unable to get ahold of Second Chance (I wouldn't answer my phone either if I were them), but the manufacturer of the fabric said that they had examined the vest and there was nothing wrong with it. Nothing wrong with it if you ignore the bullet holes!
On a related note, I must confess that it appears that Camacho and his wife were definitely a match. When addressing the court, Stacey Camacho offered no words of sympathy or remorse for Tony's murder, and only complained that the law says killing is wrong and so her husband shouldn't be put to death. Let's pray that she never goes to law school.
Jamie Zeppetella is my friend, but she's also one of my heroes. I doubt that I could muster the strength to go through what she's been going through and will continue to go through. Though Christ commands us to forgive those who trespass against us, I'm not sure that I could find it in my heart to forgive someone who murdered someone close to me.
