The truth is I've never found New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd particularly amusing, and her whining about men is particularly lame.

Maureen Dowd's penchant for provocative overstatement has found its most recent outlet in a much talked about excerpt of her new book, Are Men Necessary?, in the New York Times Magazine. In it she bemoans a perceived return of 1950s values and courtship rituals and portrays a younger generation of women as grasping, shallow housewife wannabes and "yummy mommies." In the most inflammatory and intriguing passages, she claims that men are put off by women in power, that they prefer the women who serve them—maids, masseuses, and secretaries—to their equals. She attributes the fact that she is unmarried to her powerful position as an op-ed columnist at the New York Times. Then she notes her own family history of domestic service and concludes that "being a maid would have enhanced my chances with men."

Memo to Dowd: Maybe it's you.

I'm 33 and single (eligible bachelorettes can find my e-mail address under the ABOUT THE AUTHOR header) -- and I'll admit that, on occasion, I decry the fact that women are this or that and therefore I'm still single. The difference between Dowd and myself is that I'm joking.

Dowd says that men are intimidated by successful women. Some may be, but for myself -- and I've said this often -- I'd love to marry a woman who will support me in the manner to which I'd like to become accustomed.

I know this may be hard, but Dowd should probably start her search for a man by putting her ego and arrogance in a box and dumping it in the East River. Because it's not successful women that men avoid -- plenty of them have husbands -- it's you, Maureen. Maybe if you stopped acting like a "rhymes with witch" then your luck would improve.

I know, you're saying that I don't know a thing about Maureen Dowd. Yes, I've never met her.

But she did write a book called "Are Men Necessary?" And that tells me all I need to know.
