And his name is Hal Holbrook. I mean, W. Mark Felt, former No. 2 at the FBI.

A lot of you have read many articles about Felt, but don't overlook this one by a former reporter at The San Diego Union-Tribune, James Crawley. You see, to Crawley, W. Mark Felt has always been "Uncle Mark."

As a boy, I tinkered with radios, listening to amateur radio operators and distant short wave stations, like the BBC and Voice of America. The hobby included mailing reports of a broadcast's time and details to the faraway station. In return, the station would send a colorful postcard, known as a QSL card. Listeners collected them like baseball trading cards.

One of the easiest stations to hear was powerful Radio Havana.

Not only did they send QSL cards but also regular issues of Granma, a Communist screed full of Cuban propaganda.

During his next visit, I proudly showed Uncle Mark my short wave and all my cards from Cuba, the U.S.S.R. and China.

"Yes, I know. Your name showed up on some lists, but I told them you were OK. So don't worry," he said.

I was 10.

It's a slice of life you won't see in most papers.
