I complain and bang the steering wheel when I'm stuck in traffic because of an auto accident made worse by everyone and their brother slowing to stare at the twisted wreckage.
The same thing has happened to CBS News' credibility, yet I continue to gawk and feel no remorse.
Late yesterday, CBS News released this document [Acrobat Reader required] defending its forged memos. Ernest Miller has done a fine job of mocking the document and CBS News.
Oh, and by the way, how did CBS find these "experts"? Did CBS go to the society for document examiners or whatever it is called? Or did they just find people via the internet or other publications who already supported CBS's position? Is that how you should find experts as a reporter? Conclusion first, choose expert second?
Ummm....yes, I believe that's how you do it. You wouldn't want to hire document examiners that disagree wtih what you're trying to accomplish -- sliming President George W. Bush.
Dan Rather continues to urge his competitors in the media and President Bush to answer the questions raised by these documents -- what kind of sense does that make if the documents are forgeries? Someone could forge a document that claims Rather has participated in Democratic National Committee strategy sessions while dressed as Little Bo Peep. Does Rather have to answer questions regarding that document?
