The urge to erect a wall 10 feet high and 1 million feet wide between church and state has taken another stupid turn. This time an elementary school in Wilton, N.Y. had stopped a 5-year-old girl from saying grace aloud before eating her lunch. The girl's lawyer stated, correctly, that it's the girl's First Amendment right to say the prayer at lunch time. The brainless school administration said that because the prayer was said out loud, it violated the separation of church and state.
A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order, allowing the girl to pray, until Feb. 15, when there will be a hearing on the matter.
The truth is, the judge shouldn't even have to hold a hearing. The violation of the girl's right to practice her religion is so blatant and the school's concern so stupid that the judge should have ruled for the girl and kicked the school district lawyers that defended the practice in the keister.
In a statement, the school system said the Constitution "sometimes puts a school in a difficult position."
"The school must respect the religious rights of students and parents, while also protecting the rights of others to be free from religious interference during school hours on school premises," the district said.
I'm outraged that the school district would characterize this little girl's desire to say grace as "religious interference." I have no idea who came up with the idea that there is a "freedom from being offended" somewhere in the Constitution. The idea that I lose my right to freedom of speech because someone else doesn't want to hear it is stupid. If there's intolerance being taught in schools today, it is liberals who refuse to respect the rights and extend tolerance to people of religious conviction.
