Accountability

Just like there is no law against recording a city council meeting because they are public servants doing the public’s business. Recording police as they do their duties deserves the same respect and legal protection. Here’s hoping the realization comes to elected officials sooner rather than later.

She’s making a list…

Insurance premiums are going up. That’s not the way it was supposed to work. Or maybe it would be more accurate to say that’s not the way it was sold. From an Associated Press fact-check of President Obama’s press conference last week: OBAMA: Said he never expected to extend insurance coverage to an additional 31 […]

Whatever you incentivize, you get more of

I mentioned economist Richard Barro’s work a month ago in the context of the ludicrous claim that a $1 of unemployment insurance spurs $1.63 of economic activity. Barro is back today with another op-ed in The Wall Street Journal on the tricky subject of unemployment insurance. Here’s the key number: To get a rough quantitative […]

For the record

Here’s a graph from the CBO on the Bush era federal deficits and Iraq War spending. A couple of things to note: First, note the trendline until we get to the TARP bailout, etc. in 2008. Second, the Obama administration stimulus plan added more to the deficit than all the Iraq War spending combined.

They work for us

We’re starting to see more and more stories about law enforcement officials – both cops and prosecutors – abusing the law in order to hide their activities. The latest case in point is that of Felicia Laverene Gibson who was arrested and subsequently found guilty (though apparently not in a jury trial) of “resisting, obstructing […]

Malice or incompetence?

I generally go with incompetence – it’s better to think the best of people. But to hear New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie explain how his state lost out on $400 million in federal education funds, you wonder if there might be a little something else involved. One wonders if any beltway reporters would be interested […]

The Ground Zero Mosque

Count me with the overwhelming majority of Americans who believe that they have the right to build that mosque just two blocks from the site of one of the worst mass murders in history made in the name of their religion, but that they shouldn’t. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Ever since […]

More stimulus silliness

Today’s San Diego Union-Tribune took a look at one of the local “stimulus” projects targeted by senators Tom Coburn and John McCain at a press conference last week. The “project” is actually a study on alcohol abuse and drunk driving that received $497,117 from the nearly $1 trillion stimulus bill. So, what we’re talking about […]

1099 nightmare

An oft-ignored bit of insanity in the health-care bill was the expansion in the use of IRS form 1099. For those of you who don’t know what it is, a 1099 has been used for as long as I can remember for businesses to report money paid to independent contractors. I got a 1099 from […]

Who you gonna believe?

The National Right to Life organization came out Tuesday with a press release noting that the plan for high risk pools in Pennsylvania – mandated by Obamacare – would allow taxpayer funding of abortions for any reason except sex selection. Examination of the detailed Pennsylvania plan, reveals that the "much more" will include insurance coverage […]
