I knew it was the United States' fault

Brian Ross and ABC News are lying -- again. Bob Owens calls them on it. The focus of the story, according to ABC News, is that U.S. dealers of civilian firearms are to blame for Mexico's drug cartels and their violence problems... so why do they highlight an M60 general purpose machine gun, a weapons […]

P.J. O'Rourke is a funny guy

P.J. O'Rourke spends 24 hours on the USS Teddy Roosevelt aircraft carrier. Landing on an aircraft carrier was the most fun I'd ever had with my trousers on. And the 24 hours that I spent aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt--the "Big Stick"--were an equally unalloyed pleasure. I love big, moving machinery. And machinery doesn't get […]

The Ice Age Cometh

Do you ever wonder if the newsmagazines were right back in the 1970s when they were warning us of a coming ice age? Well, an article in an Australian newspaper suggests that we're overdue for a big chill. THE scariest photo I have seen on the internet is www.spaceweather.com, where you will find a real-time […]

Web security for morons

CNN pulled a dumb-dumb on its Web site. You can order T-shirts with "ripped" from CNN's headlines. Of course, you can get the T-shirt to say anything you want by just changing the URL. Unfortunately, you can't order them. UPDATE CNN has fixed this loophole.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

I just got back from watching the penultimate showing of the night of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" at the local cineplex. A couple of things to note: First, it's rated "R" for good reason. Second, it's really funny. Jason Segel plays Peter Bretter, a "composer" who is in a long term relationship with Sarah Marshall (unattainable […]

Karl Rove's letter [annotated version]

Karl Rove wrote a letter to MSNBC's Dan Abrams which contained a number of questions regarding Abrams' personal journalistic standards (or lack thereof). Unsure of what to do, Abrams sent the letter, with his answers interspersed [reproduced here in bold] to his mentor, Keith Olbermann. Dear Mr. Abrams: Karl Rove called me "mister." On April […]

Don't know much about history

I'm looking forward to watching HBO's "John Adams" miniseries once it hits DVD, but someone's got the history wrong -- either HBO or the Los Angeles Times. I'm betting on the one with "four levels of editors." In his portrayal of our second president, Paul Giamatti creates a man perpetually dissatisfied, disgusted by the preening […]

Imagine

What if "fossil fuels" weren't made of fossils at all? What if the earth naturally made petroleum? What if gasoline was a renewable resource? Imagine the howls from the environmentalist left if there was no such thing as "peak oil." It may be true. Just what the latest Brazil find (dubbed "Sugarloaf Mountain") could mean […]

Equivalency extraordinare

My PVR recorded last night's Democrat debate, but I won't have time to watch the whole thing until Thursday night at the earliest. It's been much easier, however, to get the highlights from the various blogs. From some of the liveblogging I've managed to read, it seems to have shocked lots of people on the […]
