I just got back from watching the penultimate showing of the night of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" at the local cineplex. A couple of things to note: First, it's rated "R" for good reason. Second, it's really funny.
Jason Segel plays Peter Bretter, a "composer" who is in a long term relationship with Sarah Marshall (unattainable Hoystory girlfriend Kristen Bell) an actress on the TV show "Crime Scene: Scene of the Crime." Bretter is a slob and a slacker and Marshall breaks up with him.
In an effort to get over her, Bretter eventually heads to Hawaii where, unfortunately for him, Marshall is there with her new beau, rocker Aldous Snow (played by Russell Brand).
As they say: Hilarity ensues -- heavy on sexual innuendo and cussing. Sometimes this was just a little too over the top. I felt the same way about "Superbad."
This is not your typical romantic comedy. The main characters are three-dimensional -- including Marshall and Snow, the two who would oftentimes be caricatures.
There is nudity in this film. Unfortunately for the hormone-crazy teenage boy set, it's Bretter and it's full-frontal.
I didn't need that.
And he did it repeatedly.
I really didn't need that.
For fans of Veronica Mars, Bell's cancelled TV series, there are a couple of lines in the film where you wonder where Marshall is talking about her life or whether it's Bell talking about hers.
If you can shrug off the nudity and can deal with over-the-top sex jokes, then you'll have a good time.
For the record: The line you may have seen in the movie trailer or some of the TV spots where Kristen Bell asks Jason Segel if he wants to put on some clothes as she's breaking up with him causing him to respond "do you want to pick out the outfit that you break up with me in?" does not appear in the flim.
