Sports update

I got to go to the Utah vs. SDSU men's basketball game today before I went into work. The Aztecs had their win streak snapped, but the what struck me most about this game was the poor quality of the officiating. Several times Utah's center would set a screen for a guard and then turn and begin pushing away the SDSU guard who was supposed to be covering the shooter -- in layman's terms, it was a blatant moving screen and it was never called. The referees were also reticent to call shoves when players were going for rebounds. At least twice Utah's big men wouldn't box out so much as they would shove Aztec players out of bounds. That doesn't excuse the Aztecs' poor shooting and brain-dead play in the last 30 seconds, but the refs certainly made it more difficult.

I watched a bit of Friday night's opening ceremonies. I doubt I'm the only one who thought it was odd that the countries marched in to a variety of '80s American pop hits. Yoko Ono ensured that I wouldn't watch too much, but it has got the Barenaked Ladies' song "Be my Yoko Ono," stuck in my head.

I make this complaint every two years, so it should come as little surprise to most of you, but I hate the way that NBC covers the Olympics. When NBC does it, it's not like it is a sport. No, it is like a sports-themed "Dateline." Nothing is live, everything is pre-packaged. Competition is interspersed with 10-minute-long personal features, etc. It's annoying as H-E-Double Hockeysticks. I'd much prefer NBC to show stuff live -- even if that is 2 a.m. here on the West Coast -- and show it later in primetime for "normal" people.
