A Wall Street Journal editorial today gives the USA mens basketball a well-deserved spanking over their poor play.
The shooting and passing skills that once made the game a pleasure to watch have given way to inside wrestling and one-on-one showboating. A modern NBA game often resembles water polo without the artistry. These weaknesses get exposed at the international level, when teams can pack the inside around Mr. Duncan and dare the Americans to make an outside shot. On Saturday, Stephon Marbury shot so poorly he would have missed a water-polo net. We sympathize with U.S. coach Larry Brown, who has to supervise this team of sulking me-firsters.
If that wasn't bad enough, ESPN.com has one of those unscientific online polls. The question: "Do you think the mens USA basketball team will win the gold medal?"
The results were 73 percent -- of 20,697 votes -- of people voting "no." (Yes, I voted "no" too.)
