I'll dissect more of this later, but law professor Marjorie Cohn, a frequent contributor to the San Diego Union-Tribune's op-ed pages, argues that a U.S. attack against Iraq would be a violation of the U.N. charter.

The charter requires member states to settle all disputes by peaceful means and not use military force in the absence of an armed attack. The U.N. Charter empowers only the Security Council to authorize the use of force, unless a member state is acting in individual or collective self-defense.

Iraq has not attacked any country in the past 11 years.

Hmmm....how would Cohn classify all of the firing on U.S. and British aircraft patrolling the U.N.-mandated no-fly zone?

Cohn also uses former U.N. inspector Scott Ritter, who has received approximately $400,000 to create a "documentary" propaganda film for Saddam Hussein, to bolster her claim that Saddam is really just a cuddly, but misunderstood, teddy bear.

Finally, Cohn demonstrates that she really has a weird form of selective amnesia.

A premature use of armed force by the United States, without Security Council approval, and without providing Iraq with the opportunity to unconditionally admit the U.N. weapons inspectors and to abide by its other obligations, which are set forth in the relevant Security Council resolutions, would gravely endanger the peace and security of the Middle East region and of the entire world.

Iraq hasn't been provided "with the opportunity to unconditionally admit the U.N. weapons inspectors?"

It was provided with the "opportunity" at the end of the Gulf War. He was provided with the "opportunity" almost daily.
