Woke journalists and the New York Times—On the Radio

I'm scheduled to make an appearance on Dave Congalton's Hometown Radio show this evening to talk about this op-ed by Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton and the fallout that resulted in Editorial Page Editor James Bennet's ouster at the hands of mostly younger, woke journalists.

I'll update this post with the audio today or tomorrow when it becomes available.

Needless to say, that I see the entire incident as a ill omen for the future of unbiased journalism, even though this is the op-ed page we're talking about. The pushback on this editorial came not from any outside sources, but from so-called unbiased reporters.

I anticipate referring to several articles commenting on this issue and I wanted to provide links for people who were interested in diving deeper into this issue.

I will probably also mention the less-covered ouster of the Philadelphia Inquirer's editor over a headline.

  • Here's a link to the article that started the kerfuffle by the Inquirer's architecture critic.
  • Here's a link to a screenshot of the printed page featuring the objectionable "Buildings Matter Too" headline.
  • Here's the paper's apology.
  • Here's an article on the editor's resignation.

Finally, some articles on the larger issues underlying these two incidents: a generation of journalists who have come into the field not interested in reporting the news impartially and striving to tell all sides of a story.

  • If you only read one article, read this one by The New York Times' Ben Smith.
  • This article over at The Spectator on why Andrew Sullivan can't write about the protests is another good one. (And I don't link to it just because Sullivan once called me a "superb blogger.")

I'm also going to touch on the fact that the media's rabid anti-Trumpism (not that there isn't plenty about President Donald Trump to criticize) has resulted in a lack of trust by a large percentage of the population. For reference, here's a list by former CBS newswoman Sharyl Attkisson on media mistakes during the Trump era which as of this posting is up to #134 (and I think that subsequent reporting shows that #134 -- on the use of tear gas clearing a protest at Lafayette Park should be removed).

Woke journalists will be the end of the pretense of unbiased newspapers.

*UPDATE* You can listen to the audio below.
