Sandra Fluke, fascist

I’ve been stewing this past week over Sandra Fluke’s insistence that people who are morally opposed to abortion, birth control or sterilization pay for it. That’s what this is about. It isn’t about “women’s health.” It’s about imposing her views on those who oppose it.

In a sideshow before Democrats in Congress, Fluke complained that students attending Georgetown University—a Catholic Jesuit school—don’t get their contraception covered under the university-sponsored healthcare plan. Your morals, your religious beliefs must be crushed so that Sandra Fluke can have consequence-free sex.

Fluke testified that birth control can cost $1,000 a year and as a law student at a private university where tuition costs $23,432.50, that extra $1,000 a year is a deal-breaker. Except that you can get birth control pills for $9 a month at a Target pharmacy less than 2 miles from campus or $4 a month at WalMart.

And then Fluke told this doozy:

One woman told us that she knew birth control wasn’t covered on the insurance and she assumed that that’s how Georgetown’s insurance handle all of women’s reproductive and sexual health care. So when she was raped, she didn’t go to the doctor, even to be examined or tested for sexually transmitted infections, because she thought insurance wasn’t going to cover something like that – something that was related to a woman’s reproductive health.

Seriously? Is this believable? Is this woman an idiot? Is Fluke an idiot or was she just punk’d? A woman who was raped didn’t go to the cops or the hospital because her insurance doesn’t cover birth control? Catholic institutions need to cover birth control because if they don’t women who are raped will stay silent.

Oh, and then Rush Limbaugh called fluke a “slut.”

She’s really a thug. (And probably a dumbass.)

And don’t think she’s stopping with forcing Catholic institutions to pay for birth control. She also wants them to pay for sex change operations.

And don’t even get me started on the crummy job the news media has done covering this issue. Getreligion.org’s Mollie Hemingway has been begging for a week for any links to mainstream media stories covering this Obamacare mandate as a religious freedom issue rather than a contraception issue (as if a bottle of coke in the the office vending machine costing $1.50 somehow means that the company is blocking my access to caffeine). She’s found next to nothing.

On Sunday, Newt Gingrich thankfully gave NBC’s David Gregory an earful. But note how dogged Gregory is in maintaining the narrative.

Media misses the point

They say familiarity breeds contempt. I felt a lot less contemptuous of the media when I was working for a newspaper than I do now that I do not. I’m beginning to think that Groseclose’s book underestimates the media’s bias.

  1. Another point the MSM missed is whether Fluke is right in stating that a Catholic Institution will not cover BCPs in the cast of ovarian cancer. I don't know if that is true or not, but I wish some reporter would research it. I can easily imagine that Georgetown Law will cover BCP for the case of cancer, but not if it is used for birth control. It is similar to Finasteride -- institutions will cover it if it is prescribed for Prostate Cancer, but not if it is prescribed for hair loss.

    1. The msm hasn't but the alternative media has. Catholic institutions will cover birth control medications in situations like the one you describe.
