Beware of journalists doing math... or science

If you ever wondered why there's so much global warming hysteria in the media -- it's ignorance of science encouraged by "scientists with an agenda."

Today's example of scientific illiteracy comes from the Associated Press.

WARSAW, Poland – Researchers said Thursday they have identified the remains of Nicolaus Copernicus by comparing DNA from a skeleton and hair retrieved from one of the 16th-century astronomer's books. The findings could put an end to centuries of speculation about the exact resting spot of Copernicus, a priest and astronomer whose theories identified the Sun, not the Earth, as the center of the universe.

Solar system. Universe. Whatever.

Neither the author, no any of the four levels of editors aren't rocket scientists. (And that's a good thing.)

  1. Watch those stones you're throwing...

Read the translations of De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (and search for universe):

Or just read the intro to the Commentarilous

"All the spheres revolve about the sun as their mid-point, and therefore the sun is the center of the universe."

For Copernicus the solar system *was* the universe: the stars existed on a celestial sphere that was also centered at the location of the sun.
