This is a beaut

So, there's some lawsuits and legislation going through Congress on whether employers can require that their employees speak English -- in America.

I nearly fell down laughing and hurt myself when this lawyer they had on Fox News' "The Big Story" was defending the rights of people to speak languages other than English on the job.

The lawyer was taking the machine shop (see first link above) owners to task saying that they weren't allowed to change the rules in the middle of the game since they had hired all these Spanish speakers. She repeated this "middle of the game" card right up until the point that John Gibson asked her if the machine shop could simply refuse to hire Spanish speakers -- would that make it OK?

And her response was the fastest "yes...no" in American history. You see, if you don't hire them in the first place you'll get sued too -- for discrimination.

They get you coming and going.

  1. Matt: RE: Your November 21 article on language in the U.S.

I thought you might be amused by this.

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.

But this is predicated upon the person's becoming, in every facet an American, and nothing but an American ... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language ... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

    Theodore Roosevelt 1907
